About the Author:

It took Jan von der Bank 3650 hours of construction to get his retro racer RÈMY, made of plywood, epoxy resin and mahogany veneer, out of the tiny garage yard next to his house and launch it.

This book documents all the construction steps from the erection of the first frames in February 2017, to the finishing, veneering and painting of the hull, the interior finishing of the cabin, the casting and installation of the keel, rigging of the mast, to the christening and the first successful sail off Kiel in June 2022.

In addition, a very personal view of an intense, sometimes adventurous time opens up, which gave the author and boat builder, in addition to the joy of craftsmanship, many new friendships and some surprising insights about themselves. And in the end, a special yacht that, with its many surprising details, will probably not exist a second time.

The book is written bilingually in English and German. There are two versions to buy – with English or German cover.

Jan von der Bank was world champion in the one-man sailing dinghy Contender and is known in sailing circles by the nickname Backe. He is a writer (“The Color of the Sea”), scriptwriter for TV crime dramas (“The Old Man”, “Tatort”) and now for 5 years an enthusiastic hobby boat builder.

His favorite motto comes from Erich Kästner and best describes how he approaches things: “There is nothing good unless you do it.”
